Where Inspiration is Found

What Artists inspire me?

Since the moment I began appreciating Art, I discovered Maxfield Parish. I even think at times I would unconsciously be comparing all other artists to his luminescent landscapes.

Maxfield Parrish

He has been very influential in my work because of his color palette and his mythical scenes. How did he achieve the translucency of his colors? Even on a printed postcard they are vibrant and pop out. That, combined with his subject matter draws the viewer in and a yearning begins to be in that moment he has captured. Even after you have turned your eyes away. His work evokes emotion, wonder, and contemplation. I would like to be able to achieve that with my work. I want to pull viewers in, so they take a moment to explore the nuances of color, form, and curve. I want them to create their own story.

What Landscapes inspire me?

The Blue Ridge Mountains of Appalachia have been a place of healing for me. The contrast of their dark greens & smoky blues with our sunsets and sunrises seems to be the yin and yang of our Appalachian mountains. I could paint their beauty all day. Their yin and yang are inspiring and remind me how important balance is in my life. I think with most of my work, I try to emulate that balance with color and shape. What inspires you? Find it. Explore it. Use it.
