Native North Carolinian Mountain Wildflower Acrylic Series

Springtime is one of my favorite times to walk along the trails of our beautiful mountains and identify wildflowers. Each flower holds a special meaning for me. This area of the North Carolina mountains was settled by the Scotch Irish in the 1700 &1800 hundreds. This heritage is celebrated each year by thousands gathering at the Grandfather Highland Games. The following acrylic pieces are part of a larger series that I am constantly adding to. They are all created on wood panels using the same acrylic technique I developed in order for the background to resemble well-loved tartans.

Mountain Landscape Acrylic Series

If I could choose one goal in my acrylic paintings, it would be to capture the magical light that exists in our world. Every acrylic piece is a study of light in one form or another. As with most of my pieces, I love using acrylic paint mixed with a homemade medium that allows me to softly blend or layer contrasting colors. There is always a hidden story in the layers.

Some of those layers are heavy and are carved out to show underlying form or color. Whereas, the other layers are more translucent to softly allow the hidden story to come through. At first glance, my acrylic pieces may seem one thing but if you give yourself time to see, you will find many stories in the movement and light of the paint. There are always many conversations going on. The movement, color, and form are all having a lovely philosophical discussion about the meaning of life, hopefully coming to a beautiful, colorful consensus.
