With Every Challenge, an Opportunity is Born

In 2012, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. The left logical/analytical side of my brain went kaput and the physical/cognitive limitations became the norm. No more teaching the sciences or big outdoor adventures. BUT! When one thing is taken away another is gifted. The right side of my brain shouted “Great, it's my turn!” Overnight an artist was born, literally. The long journey and struggle to accept my new self was to pick up one of the oldest tools of expression known. It has become my instrument of release, my instrument that sets me free, my instrument of hope. How odd that such a small tool could have so much power.

Self-Taught & Motivated

With paintbrush in hand, I became a self-taught mixed media artist who is always trying to push the boundaries of expression. Happily, I work in my studio on our property outside of Boone, NC. Mountain pasture and wooded views have become my muse, but I am most inspired by the expressive color of our mountain skies from dawn to dusk. Most of my pieces are experiments because I never know what I am going to paint or draw when I sit down at my easel.

Art is an expression of healing and my visual story of challenge, growth, and acceptance. All because of a little paint and a brush

Getting Started

When I first started creating, I had very rigid lines because it was the only way for me to feel in control. However, control is an illusion no matter how much we strive to attain its slippery edges. Over time I accepted this and grew personally and artistically. Now there are layers upon layers of fluidity in my work. The first layers of paint set the scene for the final layers of paper, recycled fabrics, and anything else I can find. I have even used medical gauze! For me, texture, color, and shape allow for depth and movement. There are always multiple layers in my paintings which I hope can lead to new ways of seeing. As in all life, there are layers of self, perspective, and expression. Art is an expression of healing and my visual story of challenge, growth, and acceptance. All because of a little paint and a brush.
